Montvue Avenue in Abbotsford has been a shelter space since 1973, and it showed. The roof was failing, water leaks had taken hold, and the HVAC and mechanical systems were well past their serviceable life. When Archway Community Services and BC Housing needed a partner to transform this building into a safe, functional, and dignified 30-bed shelter, MacQueen Systems came on board to make it happen. This wasn’t just a tenant improvement, it was a full gut renovation of a building that needed to serve some of the most vulnerable people in the Fraser Valley.
Now we have a shelter space for 30 residents — so they can have showers, they can have something to eat, and they have a good place to sleep.”
— Craig MacQueen, Owner MacQueen Systems
Every system in the building was replaced: new electrical, new HVAC, new air intakes, new windows, and a full access control and security system throughout. The kitchen was rebuilt from scratch to support two of the three daily meals prepared on site. Shower rooms, accessible bathrooms, and a monitored laundry facility were all designed and built with both function and dignity in mind — thoughtful layouts, commercial-grade fixtures, and 100% wheelchair accessibility throughout. MacQueen Systems also donated the fully engineered concrete ramp on site. This project was completed in partnership with BC Housing, the City of Abbotsford, and Archway Community Services.
